It costs you nothing, but values more to an author.
Though few of reader friends leave their valuable comments after reading the article, most of them are not. Few of them send personal messages or mails or scraps appreciating the article. They may not be aware of the value of the comment written in the same page of the article. I too used to send private messages about articles, if I get error when I try to post comments for more than two or three attempts.
Adding a comment is not going to increase the quality of the article or give a monetary benefit to the author, because monetary benefit depends on the number of views and not the comments.
